System Requirements
All of the systems developed by DHDial & Company are 32-bit, client/server applications. Each user’s personal (client workstation) computer must be connected to the firm’s server computer where the system’s database will be stored. A database management system must also be installed on the server computer to manage this database.
Client Workstation Computers
Outlined below is the minimum recommended configuration for the client workstation computers used to process the application software:
- IBM compatible personal computer
- Processor: Pentium class or higher
- RAM: 32MB or greater
- Hard Disk capacity for the application software: 25 – 35 MB
- Hard Disk capacity for the database management system client software
- CD-ROM drive or access to a CD-ROM drive on the server for software installation
- Monitor: VGA or higher monitor suitable for processing Windows applications
- Operating System: Microsoft Windows 95/98 or Windows NT/2000
Application Server Computer
A server computer is required on the network to process the database management system software and to store the system’s database. In client/server terminology, this computer is known as an application server. Most local area networks have a dedicated file server computer used to store documents and to manage network printers. Smaller firms can use this file server as an application server if it meets the requirements for processing the database management system software and has sufficient disk capacity to store the database. Larger firms may desire to attach an additional server computer to the network for the financial accounting database. The existing file server can continue to be used for storing documents and other files.
The hardware requirements for an application server are defined by the selected network operating system and database management system software. Generally, the minimum requirements for the server computer will include the following:
- Processor: Pentium class or higher
- RAM: 128MB or greater
- Hard Disk capacity for the database management system software and database files
- CD-ROM drive for software installation
- Backup: Tape backup system suitable for routinely backing up the database
- Operating System: Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 2000 Server
Database Management Software
Client/server systems require that a database management system be installed on the firm’s server computer to manage the database. Standard database management systems can be purchased from a number of software distributors. The client/server systems developed by DHDial & Company support the following database management systems:
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Sybase SQL Anywhere
- Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere
Your selection of a database management system will be based on the size of the database and the number of concurrent users. We can assist you in selecting an appropriate database management system for use with any of our client/server applications.
